Mark out the shape of your pond with rope. Any shape can be formed using the rope and 2 metre liner supplied.
Cut the turf around the marking rope using a spade or half moon turf edger.
Remove the turf stacking it to one side for use later around the pond edge to cover liner if required.
Lay PVC liner in the sun to warm which will make it more supple for placing into the hole.
Dig the shallow end to approx. 6 inches (15cm) then dig opposite end to approx. 18inches (45cm) making sure the edge is gently tapered so any wildlife can have easy access in and out of the pond.
Dig approx. 3inches (10cm) deep by 6inches (20cm) wide all the way around the top edge of the pond to bury the liner. Ensure any sharp stones are pressed firmly into the ground so they don’t puncture the liner or if you have any underlay/old carpet etc place this under the liner as a safety guard. You could also use soft sand.
Place the liner into the centre of the pond and spread out to cover all of the pond area ensuring you have enough all the way around. Fill using the hose pipe, easing out as many creases as possible as it fills. When the water has reached maximum level turn the water off then trim off any excess liner just below the original turf level .
Now if so wished the turf can be placed back onto the top ledge to cover and trap the liner or you can use any pebbles or stone for this process. Rocks can also be added for the aesthetics of the pond and to also encourage wildlife to take up residence.
At this stage you are ready to add marginal plants to the shallow end of the pond and lilies , water hawthorn and oxygenating weed to the deeper end.
